Distribution
This species was originally known only from southern and south-eastern
Europe, Turkey, Syria, and Morocco. It was first recorded in
Germany in 2008, and in the meantime has spread across Germany (
Wiemers 2016). In
south-eastern Bayern the species is common and occurs in three full
generations, similar to the other common species Pieris rapae and Pieris
napi (
Von Scholley-Pfab and Pfab 2017).
Biology
The species prefers dry and hot areas, usually with rocks and stones and
sparse vegetation of shrubs and small trees. The females oviposit on
the leaves of their hostplant, usually on the underside (
Von Scholley-Pfab and Pfab 2017). The larvae feed on Iberis species (Brassicaceae), mainly Iberis saxatilis and Iberis sempervirens.
Wiemers (2016) lists Diplotaxis tenuifolia (Brassicaceae) as another important foodplant.
Von Scholley-Pfab and Pfab 2017
show that in southern Bayern eggs are found in three waves from April
until September, thus providing evidence for at least three full generation per
year.
Wiemers (2016)
suggests the presence of up to five generations in Germany, based on the
records of imagines from March until November. In Morocco the species
occurs in a single generation in July and August only (
Tolman and Lewington 1998). The species overwinters at the pupal stage.
