Research
activities The main
research interests are the structure and dynamics of hydrogen
bonded, neutral clusters which play an important role as
solvents: methanol, ammonia, and water. The speciality of
the group is the size selection of the clusters up to n=12 by
momentum transfer in collisions with rare gas atoms. For larger
clusters, we work with distributions or develop new methods.
Here we would like mention the method of doping the clusters
with sodium. With these clusters ambitious spectroscopic
experiments and scattering and dissociation processes have been
carried out. At the moment the experiments are no longer
continued at the MPI. One machine has been transferred to the J.
Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry, Academy of Sciences
of the Czech Republic in Prague under the direction of Dr.
Michal Farnik.
Another machine is now working in the group of Prof. Martin A.
Suhm, Institut für Physikalische Chemie der Universität
Göttingen, under the responsibility of Dr. T. Zeuch.
A further successful cooperation has been carried out with Prof.
Bernd Abel from
Leipzig using the liquid micro jet for astrophysical
applications.
